I came to Japan from the Philippines 25 years ago. Because I have always enjoyed driving, I applied to Shimohana Logistics to work as a driver. When I first joined, I held an AT-only (automatic transmission-only) license, but I used the company’s support program to lift the restriction, and I am now entrusted with a manual 3-ton truck.

I work in route delivery, transporting ingredients to restaurants. Because the routes are fixed, it is easy to learn the roads, and even those with no prior experience can start with confidence. At my previous workplace there were many people, and I sometimes struggled with interpersonal relationships. Now, I spend much of my time alone in the truck and can work at my own pace, which allows me to perform my duties with peace of mind.

I have been living in Japan for eight years. I previously worked full-time at a supermarket, but I wanted to grow on a larger stage and joined Shimohana Logistics as a full-time employee. My family in Nepal is also involved in logistics, and my wish to learn the latest logistics systems and on-site operations at a leading Japanese company led me to apply.

In addition to Nepali, I speak English, Hindi, and Japanese. I currently make use of these language skills to handle training and shift management for new team members from various countries, including Indonesia and Myanmar. For colleagues who feel anxious due to differences in language and culture, I provide explanations in English and support their understanding of Japanese. I have been in Japan for five years. Before arriving, I studied Japanese in China for about a year and a half, and came to Japan at my wife’s suggestion. I previously worked as a temporary employee at a logistics center, but considering my family’s future and seeking a more stable environment, I started working at Shimohana Logistics.

I have a 12-year-old daughter, and my wife encouraged me to work as a full-time employee with comprehensive benefits and insurance. I currently sort food and frozen products, as well as organize and tidy the warehouse. The freezers are around minus 20°C, which is a very cold environment, but we are provided dedicated cold‑weather gear, so I can work with peace of mind. Some items are heavy, but we use pallets and hand carts, which helps reduce the physical load.

Because I can read and write kanji, I am able to check products and carry out tasks smoothly. After joining the company, I also learned hiragana and katakana, and I can now properly read product names such as ice cream. Being able to improve my Japanese while working is one of the appealing points of this job.

During busy periods there is overtime, but I have been able to maintain a routine in which I return home in the evening and eat with my family. The most important thing to me at work is safety. To prevent accidents, I am always mindful not to overexert myself and to follow the rules.
